I slide back in my seat once Jaime’s footsteps subside and the front door closes, but his words still echo in my head.

What was that conversation even? He has no right to question me about any men I’m dating. Miles stood no chance anyway — I turned him down right away, and, to my surprise, he graciously accepted it. He knew the position he was in, and it was in no way an attempt to hold the job over my head.

What a great guy, honestly.

So, what the hell is wrong with Jaime?

I bury my face in my hands and hold in the scream that’s scratching at my lungs. Everything in my chest hurts. My heart, even, because as much as I hate to admit it, my feelings for him were coming back in full force.

I was going to think about it. After what he said last night, I thought Jaime and I could have a chance. But if that’s how he was going to react if I chose someone else besides him, then it’s clear he isn’t the right choice.

It’s probably for the best, anyway. What would my parents think? If Sarah and Michael Darden are capable of hating, they would hate Jaime with the heat of a thousand suns. After I told them I was pregnant and that Jaime had abandoned us, his name was basically forbidden in our house.

And now they’re coming to visit. Tomorrow.

“Everything’s going to be fine,” I murmur into my fingers. “All fine.”
